The article provides a characteristic and description of the tomato variety Japanese crab: its distinctive features, advantages and disadvantages, agrotechnical requirements.
Another gardening season has come to an end. Owners of personal plots take stock, assess successes and failures, and make plans for the future. And you can already worry about updating the set of varieties in the next season. Such a novelty in the greenhouse can be a tomato of the Japanese crab variety.
This variety has already attracted the attention of vegetable growers, because everyone who has tasted its fruits at least once becomes its constant fans. It is considered one of the best salad tomatoes ever known.
Description and characteristics of the tomato variety Japanese crab
Its authors are breeders of the Altai company "Demetra-Siberia". Japanese crab was bred for growing in the harsh conditions of the Siberian climate about 10 years ago.
Variety mid-season, it can be grown both in film shelters and greenhouses, and in open ground, because it is able to withstand temperature extremes. In the absence of frost and low temperatures, the fruits can be harvested until November.
Tomatoes of this variety are unusually tasty, they are large in size and have an unusual ribbed pincer shape.
- The harvest ripens approximately in 110-115 days after emergence;
- Tall and indeterminate (unlimited growth);
- Requires garter and pinning;
- The best results are obtained by forming 1-2 stems;
- The fruits are large, the weight of one fruit from 300 to 500 gr.;
- From 1 sq.m. you can collect up to 11 kilograms of fruit;
- The variety is not considered a hybrid, self-pollinated.
Sowing and growing seedlings
Tomato seeds can be purchased from such companies as: "Harvest of Good Luck", "Aelita", "Siberian Garden".
The Japanese crab variety, like most large-fruited tomatoes, is grown through seedlings. For future seedlings, it is better to purchase special soil, for peppers and tomatoes... It should be a mixture of turf and humus in equal parts.
The composition should be disinfected in one of the following ways:
- Ignite the composition in the oven at a temperature of 200 degrees;
- Spill with a pink solution of potassium permanganate;
- Spill over with boiling water.
Before sowing for disinfection seeds soak for 20-30 minutes in a pink solution of potassium permanganateand then rinse under running water.
In order not to catch the seeds out of the water, first put them in cheesecloth.
- Prepare special containers such as plastic cups. Can also be sown in a common seedling container.
- Container ground lightly compact and soak well... Make grooves in it no more than 1 cm deep at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. Seeds are laid out with a step of 2-3 cm and sprinkled with earth.
- Container covered with foil or glass... Until the emergence of shoots, the temperature is maintained at about 22 degrees, and the soil must be moist all the time. After the emergence of shoots, the container is installed in a lighted place, but in the first 4-5 days they try to maintain the heat up to a temperature of 17-20 degrees.
- At night, during the entire period of growing seedlings, the temperature is maintained up to 12 degrees, so that the plants develop a good root system. When the first true leaves appear, the daytime temperature is raised to 22 degrees. The bookmark of flower brushes in tomatoes is directly related to lighting. The better the illumination, the faster the flower brushes are laid.
- After the appearance of the second true leaf, seedlings dive.
- Top dressing should be done with complex fertilizer.
Low-productive plants will be obtained from seedlings grown in cramped conditions.
Most often, tomato seedlings are planted indoors. in the beginning of May... Plants of the Japanese crab variety require a lot of space, so for 1 sq. disembarks no more than 4 plants.
The predecessors of tomatoes can be cabbage, cucumbers, legumes. The best soil is loose and nutritious. But young plants are planted on open beds after the threat of night frosts disappears.
Immediately after planting, plant supports should be taken care of.
It is better to form a bush in one or two stems... Remove excess leaves and stepsons in a timely manner. Especially intensively stepchildren are formed over the first flower cluster, their regular removal improves the illumination of the bush, its airflow and increases the future yield.
Tomatoes should be watered once a week Better in the early morning or evening with settled water only at the root. It is undesirable to water the plants themselves, this provokes the appearance of fungi.
In a hot period, it is better to feed with nitrogen fertilizer, with an abundance of rain - potash. The plants should be fed three times per season, is often not recommended, because as a result, leaf growth will increase, and ovaries will become smaller.
The soil around the plants is required mulchь cut grass, sawdust, which will keep moisture longer and increase yields.
The first cluster with 4-6 future large fruits is formed above the eighth or ninth leaf, the next - every two leaves. An indeterminate bush will give about 11 brushes. Since the fruits are large and heavy, a garter of the hands is required.
If during the formation of fruits the temperature drops to 4 degrees, the buds may crumble. It is this ability to shed ovaries at low temperatures is one of the main disadvantages of the variety.
In addition, there is an opinion that the variety bred for the Siberian climate will not feel very comfortable in the southern regions.
Reviews of vegetable growers
The vast majority of reviews about the Japanese crab variety are positive. Fruit excellent sweet and sour taste, the pulp is dense, juicy, with a minimum of seeds, which makes them ideal for salads, sauces and other tomato products.
According to culinary experts, salads, which have added Japanese crab tomatoes, retain their high taste and presentation for a longer time.
Japanese crab, bred for Siberian latitudes, resistant to top and root rot, tobacco mosaic, late blight... But in a situation of excessive humidity, for example, with prolonged rainy weather, late blight can still appear.
To prevent the development of the disease, immediately after the appearance of the first signs of the disease, the treatment of plants with special means: "Fitosporin", "Trichopol" and ash should be started. Spraying of plants is carried out every three days.
The variety Japanese crab does not require special skills in its cultivation, you just need to observe the correct agrotechnology of indeterminate crops and do this, putting your soul into the process. And then he will certainly delight vegetable growers with an excellent harvest of delicious pink pincer-shaped fruits.
Tomato Japanese crab: variety description, photos, reviews, planting and care
In November 2005, an application for variety testing was submitted to the State Variety Commission. It was registered in the State Register in 2007 as a variety for cultivation in private household plots both in greenhouses and in open ground in all regions of Russia. The variety copes with temperature extremes, although when the temperature drops to 2–4 ° C, the flowers begin to fall off. This is a full-fledged variety, not a hybrid, so the seeds obtained on their own are suitable for growing these tomatoes next season.
An indeterminate variety, in the open field the bushes reach a height of 100-120 cm, in greenhouses - 200 cm. The first flowers are formed above 7-8 leaves, 6-10 ovaries grow on each brush. Leaves are light green, medium in size. The ripening time of the fruits is average, we get the first tomatoes 110-115 days after the sprouts appear.
Speaking about the characteristics and description of the Japanese crab tomato variety, it is worth mentioning not only the quality of the vegetables themselves, but also the bushes that will have to be grown in order to get a good harvest of delicious fruits. So, the bushes of the "Japanese crab" variety are indeterminate, tall. Their height in favorable conditions of the greenhouse reaches 2 m. To increase the yield, these giants must be correctly and timely formed into one or two stems. It is worth noting that the proposed variety can be cultivated not only in a greenhouse or greenhouse, but also in an open garden. In unprotected conditions, tomatoes must be carefully tied to a reliable support.
Important! Tomatoes "Japanese crab" are not a hybrid, which means that tomato seeds can give full-fledged offspring of future years. You can harvest them yourself.
Indeterminate bushes form fruiting clusters throughout the growing season. The first inflorescence usually appears above 7-8 leaves of the plant. Each brush contains about 6-10 simple flowers. To obtain larger fruits, experienced gardeners pinch the brushes, leaving only 4-5 flowers.
The plant forms numerous stepchildren, which must be removed in accordance with the chosen tomato formation scheme. It is also recommended to pinch the main shoot about a month before the end of fruiting. This measure will speed up the ripening process of already existing fruits.
Tomato leaves of the proposed variety are medium-sized, light green in color. It is customary to remove the lower leaves of indeterminate tomatoes so that the plant can correctly distribute nutrients.
Description of the fruits of the Japanese crab tomato
The fruits of the Japanese crab variety outwardly slightly resemble a crab claw, especially if you look at them from the side. They are slightly flattened, with noticeable ribbing at the peduncle. Fruit color is deep pink. At the break, the fruits are fleshy, juicy, with a small amount of seeds.
Tomato "Japanese crab" can be called the best among many other varieties. It is distinguished, first of all, by its interesting, bright taste and aroma. The variety is ideal for making salads, sandwiches and other cold snacks. Large vegetables are very fleshy and contain little free juice. Their average weight is 300 g, but some especially large fruits reach a mass of 800-900 g. The giants of the "Japanese crab" variety can be seen in the photo below:
Tomatoes of the "Japanese crab" variety are flattened, their surface is ribbed. There are 5-6 small seed chambers inside the tomato. The color of vegetables changes as they ripen from green to bright red or crimson. A dark spot typical of this variety can be seen near the stem of the tomato.
Tomatoes have a dense skin that prevents the fruit from cracking. It is able to preserve the integrity of even the largest tomatoes. But despite its strength, the skin of the Japanese crab tomato is rather tender and homogeneous. It is almost invisible when consuming fresh vegetables.
The purpose of tomatoes is universal. They can be used to prepare snacks, various culinary dishes or canning winter preparations. Large vegetables are difficult to fit into jars, so they must be divided into parts before harvesting. Fleshy tomatoes are great for making ketchup or pasta. The juice from the Japanese crab tomatoes is quite thick.
The fruits of the Japanese crab are deep pink, round, flattened to the stalk. Tomatoes got their name for their ribbing - pronounced slices resemble crustacean claws.
Other characteristics of the fruit:
- not dense, but fleshy, juicy flesh
- pleasant tomato taste and aroma
- pronounced sugar content
- 5-6 seed chambers
- weight from 250 to 350 g.
Interesting! According to vegetable growers, the maximum fruit weight that they managed to get is 600 g.
Tomato yield up to 11 kg from 1 square meter (from four bushes).
Fruits are flat-round, with lush shoulders, slightly ribbed at the stalk, not dense, at the stage of maturity, pink-raspberry color, weighing 300-400 grams, fleshy, juicy, very tasty. These tomatoes are good for fresh consumption, juices, sauces.
Tomato yield Japanese crab: up to 11 kg of fruits per 1 sq. meter of planting (with proper agricultural technology).
This tomato is resistant to top and root rot, tobacco mosaic virus.
This tomato variety is included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in the Russian Federation for growing in open ground and under film shelters in personal subsidiary farms.
Scope of the fruit
The main area of application of the fruits of this variety is fresh consumption (salads, slices) and processing (juices, pastes, ketchups, fruit drinks). Tomatoes for salad purposes are not suitable for long-term storage, so you should not tighten them using ripe fruits.
Agrotechnics of cultivation of tomatoes
For the tomato Japanese crab, the seedling method is used. Sowing seeds is carried out 60-65 days before the expected date of planting in the ground. For planting, use a substrate or a specially prepared soil mixture.
Before planting, the seed is treated with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide or aloe juice. To increase the germination rate, the formation of healthy seedlings, the seeds are additionally soaked in a growth stimulator.
Soil is poured into containers, lightly tamped, grooved and seeds are laid out. A layer of peat is poured on top. A sieve is used for even distribution.
After planting, watering is carried out with warm water using a sprinkler, the container is covered with film or glass until the sprouts are pecked. The normal development of seedlings is ensured subject to the rules of cultivation.
During the formation of seedlings, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is periodically applied. It is important to monitor the soil moisture level. As the surface layer dries up, the plants are watered. They are provided with the optimal air temperature necessary for normal development.
Gardeners' reviews indicate the need for picking in the phase of formation of 2 true leaves. This activity stimulates the growth of the root system, allows you to reject weak seedlings.
When choosing a plot for tomatoes, crop rotation is taken into account. The best precursors for tomatoes are carrots, onions, parsley, and cabbage. The planting site should be well-lit by the sun, not have high soil moisture.
Despite the fact that the variety is not picky about the composition of the soil, it is better to allocate areas with a loose structure, rich in nutrients, for planting. Best results are obtained when grown in loamy soils with good moisture penetration.
Tomatoes can be planted in open and protected ground, observing the planting dates. Reviews of vegetable growers indicate that you should not thicken the planting of plants. For 1 m², it is recommended to place up to 4 bushes at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other.
Crop care consists in timely watering. It is recommended to apply water at the root. To ensure drip irrigation, uniform distribution of moisture and prevent drying of the surface layer of the soil, mulching is carried out.
Black fiber can be used as mulch. The use of organic materials (straw, hay, leaves) serves as a source of additional nutrition for plants.
At all stages of tomato development, mineral fertilizing with complex preparations is required. The quantitative composition of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus is regulated depending on the quality of the soil, the needs of the crop.
A tall bush is formed by carefully removing excess shoots. It is recommended to graze plants in the morning, removing no more than 3-4 stems. To prevent infection of the bush with an infection, the procedure is carried out manually, with gloves.
The plant is tied to a support.Under the conditions of proper agricultural technology, the bushes are less susceptible to damage by various diseases, including late blight. Tomato variety Japanese crab with fruits resembling a crab's claw, if the rules of care are followed, it allows you to get a high yield.
Tomato Japanese crab: photo and description of fruits
You ask: "This variety is no different from others, why are you talking about the contradictory reviews about it?" The answer lies in the fruits of the Japanese crab. They have a very unusual shape. They are round and flattened, but at the same time they have a notch on one side and ribbing near the base, which is why they very much resemble a crab's claw.
They can be pink, crimson, or yellow. Their size is usually at least 300 grams, but some gardeners say that they managed to collect fruits weighing about 800 grams.
The weight of one Japanese crab tomato can reach 800 grams
Japanese crab fruits have a not very thick shiny skin that protects them during transport. Their shelf life is not very long, but they may well lie in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks.
On the packaging, the manufacturer can depict smooth, round tomatoes. If you have grown just like that, then most likely this is not a Japanese crab, but some completely different variety.
Such tomatoes are fleshy and juicy. One fruit can contain more than 6 seed chambers. They taste sweet with a pleasant sourness. Japanese crab is ideal for preparing salads, according to some chefs - this is the best tomato variety. In addition to salads, it can be added to main courses, or processed into tomato juice and ketchup. Fresh canning such tomatoes will not work as they are too large.
When growing a crop, the seedling method is used; planting seeds directly into open soil is unlikely to give positive results. It is advisable to plant seeds in March, between the 8th and 10th, in which case their germination rate will be within 95%. The sowing depth is one centimeter. Greenhouses or heated greenhouses are ideal places for planting seeds. Before sowing seeds, it is advisable to pickle them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then wash them.
When growing seedlings, the land in the greenhouse needs to be constantly moistened, and so on until the first shoots appear. Don't forget also:
- periodically ventilate the greenhouse room so that fresh air flows in and insects fly in, which will pollinate the plant
- make sure there are no drafts.
You need to do a pick after the first two or three full-fledged leaves appear from the ground. Planting seedlings in a permanent place should be based on the conditions of its growing:
- if the plant grows in a greenhouse, moreover, it is heated, then it is time to start planting in early April
- if you are planting a crop in the open air, wait until May, when you are sure that all the deadlines for late frosts are already behind.
You need to plant seedlings in two or three bushes on each square meter. It would be ideal if the cultivation of the variety "Japanese crab" was used the same soil where legumes grew before or now grow in the neighborhood. Cabbage, cucumbers, onions, and carrots are also good options. In any case, the land should be:
- rich in nutrients, i.e. filled with rotted compost or humus with the addition of ash.
After planting, with proper care and if all the necessary conditions are met, the plant will powerfully grow. The height of the bushes is one and a half to two meters, the variety is not standard. The leaves are large, dense. The plant will definitely need:
- structures that will help keep the fruits in weight - vertical or horizontal trellises
- tying up
- pinching. Variety "Japanese crab" forms two stepsons. They are quite enough for successful growth and for the formation of ovaries.
- trimming excess leaves, which are able to take away some of the nutrients and evaporate a lot of moisture. Ideally, the plant can grow in the form of vines with almost no foliage on them.
It is better to grow tomatoes of this variety in one or two stems. It is recommended to form the second stem under the initial brush from the stepson. All the other stepchildren are cut off.
Further care also requires compliance with certain rules. The gardener needs:
- periodically, in the early morning or in the evening after sunset, water the culture with water, always warm. Watering preferably at the root or directly into the holes. Protect the plants themselves from moisture, it contributes to the appearance of fungi
- to introduce complex mineral compositions as top dressing in the soil. This will need to be done literally two to three times during the entire vegetative period. Too often - not good, since the leaves begin to grow very rapidly, and, on the contrary, few ovaries are formed.
If you are growing outdoors, it is important to balance the nutrients according to the natural conditions:
- if the days are very hot, the culture will need more nitrogen
- if the weather is gloomy and cloudy, the sun is almost invisible, then potassium should be added to the top dressing.
Transfer to the ground
A day before planting seedlings, treat the soil with boiling water or a solution of potassium manganese. For 1 sq. m plant 2 to 4 bushes. Decide immediately on the method of tying plants:
- fastening to the wire frame
- fastening to the mesh
- linear mount.
Remember! Do not overtighten the loop of the tomato garter to avoid breaking the stem.
Reviews of the tomato Japanese crab
"Siberian Garden", Japanese crab - A wonderful variety, in my collection of pink tomatoes it takes the first place in taste and yield ADVANTAGES: Large pink tomato, very tasty and very fruitful DISADVANTAGES: Loses ovaries at very low temperatures I have been dealing with tomatoes for more than 10 years. During this time, I tested about 200 different varieties of this delicious "vegetable fruit" on my garden plot. She refused most of them, but 11 varieties and 5 hybrids (for example, Kasamori) received a permanent registration on my beds. The leading position in this list is occupied by a pink tomato from the Siberian Garden "Japanese Crab" producer. The plant is tall, grows up to 2 meters in the open field. Ties 5-7 tassels. Most fruits weigh 250-350 grams, but some can be much larger. I managed to grow a tomato weighing 720 grams. The fruit at the break is fleshy, sugary. Its taste is harmonious - sweet and at the same time has a slight sourness, which favorably distinguishes it from most fresh pink and green fruit counterparts.
This year in the open field I tested the variety Japanese crab (salad). The bush is tall for open ground, more than 1m, the fruit is large, pink, fleshy, tastes good.
ADVANTAGES: Very productive, little late blight, tasty. DISADVANTAGES: Some fruits had a zone of dense white-green fiber in the region of the stalk. I want to write about Japanese crab tomatoes, and no matter what company these seeds are. A few words only about the variety. Planted last year for the first time, planted immediately in open ground on May 10th. Almost everything has risen. Tomato bushes grew tall, taller than my height: about 180-200 cm. During the entire fruiting period, the tomatoes were both large and smaller, but they were not small. It tastes very juicy and meaty! I made juice out of them. Compared to the Rosamarin tomato variety, these tomatoes do not taste as delicate as Rosamarin. The fruits of my bushes were difficult to detach from the stalk, and I had to twist or cut them with scissors. But it was also a plus, because the ripe and overripe tomatoes did not fall off and hung on the bush until I took them off. The disadvantage of my tomatoes was that in almost all fruits in the region of the stalk and in the upper part of the tomato, the pulp was dense white-green (as if unripe). I watered my tomatoes all summer with water from a well directly, that is, the water was almost ice cold. There is one nuance due to which, in my opinion, my tomatoes were deficient (except for watering with ice water): they were deprived of the morning (eastern) sun during the entire first half of the day. The variety, in my opinion, is very productive. I didn’t keep track of how good it was, since everything was eaten, but in the refrigerator or in a cool subfield I had a ripe red tomato for about a week.
Observing the rules of planting and growing Japanese crab tomatoes, you can achieve an excellent harvest of beautiful, tasty and healthy fruits from healthy plants throughout the season and get excellent preparations for the winter.
