Eggshells, onion skins, drunk tea and coffee work for the harvest

Eggshells, onion skins, drunk tea and coffee work for the harvest

Winter supplies for the summer season

I have four jars in the kitchen. In one I collect eggshells throughout the winter, in another - onion skins, in the third - sleeping tea, in the fourth - orange peels. I will take all these supplies to the dacha in the spring, and they will be very useful.

  • Eggshell
  • Onion peel
  • Sleep tea and coffee
  • Orange peels

Eggshell

I use it very actively in the garden. Every spring I add the crushed shells to the stem circles of roses, as well as to the beds for peppers, eggplants, watermelons and melons, for beets and other crops that love calcium.

The shell does not allow the soil to acidify and improves its structure: it becomes lighter, more fluffy. One to two glasses per square meter is sufficient. When boiling eggs, part of the calcium is washed out of the shell, therefore, the shell of raw eggs is more useful for deoxidizing the soil.

But all the same, I collect any shell - everything that is obtained in the course of kitchen affairs. I rinse it with water, although I do not always have time to do it, then I dry it so that there is no bad smell. Periodically tamp it in the jar to fit more. For use in the garden, I then grind it in one of three ways: I break it with a crush for mashed potatoes or roll it out with a rolling pin for dough, or grind it on a coffee grinder - this is the best way, because the finest grind is obtained, and physically it is easier.

Eggshells can be used at home to feed seedlings or house flowers. I usually water them with water left over from boiling eggs. You can also do this: take a washed and crushed shell from 3 - 4 raw eggs, pour a liter of boiling water, leave for 5 days with daily stirring. Two or three watering with this broth seedlings of peppers, eggplants, asters and other lovers of non-acidic soils are very useful for these plants.

In summer, not only vegetable or flower crops can be watered with a decoction of eggs or an infusion of the shell. Apples, pears, cherries, plums, gooseberries respond well to such watering. Shredded shells are also good for the compost heap.

Onion peel

The more it is studied, the more useful properties are found in it. It turned out that it contains a full set of micro- and macroelements, as well as antibacterial substances. And some other substances that prevent the reproduction of pests of garden crops.

Many years ago I brought a strawberry mite to my plot along with the rosettes of new varieties of strawberries purchased from the state farm. And for a long time she could not get rid of this pest in any way. Only after I mulched the bushes with onion peels did he disappear. Now my strawberries are as pure as a rose after the rain.

Onion husks are also used to kill aphids, thrips and even spider mites. To do this, prepare such an infusion: a liter jar of onion husks is poured with two liters of hot (40 degrees) water, insisted for one or two days, filtered. Add laundry soap for adhesion. When spraying, the solution is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 2.

It is necessary to fight the spider mite persistently, spray it for a month or one and a half times a week, try to get the solution to the lower part of the leaf. The same infusion is used against strawberry mites.

With the help of onion peel infusion, you can fight cruciferous flea on radishes, on all cabbage and other crops on which this pest settles. To do this, pour half a bucket of husks with hot water until the bucket is full, cover with a lid. Insist for two days, strain and spray with this infusion, without diluting.

It is useful, instead of potassium permanganate, to spray the ground with a similar infusion before sowing seeds to disinfect it.

In an infusion of onion husks, it is useful to soak potatoes before planting. Housewives also noticed that carrots are better stored if they are sprayed with onion peel infusion before storing them. There is no scientific research on this topic, so each housewife makes a solution in her own way. Any option helps.

Infusion of onion peels can be used to revive yellowing and fading leaves of cucumbers and zucchini. To do this, it is enough to spray these leaves with such an infusion: pour 10 g of onion husks with 5 liters of warm water, leave for four days, strain. This method of "treatment" also helps: pour a couple of handfuls of onion husks into a bucket of warm water, cover with a lid, bring the water to a boil, keep it under the lid until it cools. When the infusion has cooled, strain it. Then take 2 liters of infusion, add up to 10 liters of warm water, pour the plants from the watering can directly over the leaves. In a few days, the watered plants will be transformed. The yellowed leaves even turn green again.

They love such watering and indoor plants. Still: here is food, and getting rid of diseases and pests.

All infusions of onion peels should be used on the day of preparation in the evening hours.

Dry onion husks can be stored for a long time without losing their positive properties. You need to collect it from healthy bulbs. I leave the most brightly colored onion scales for coloring Easter eggs and to give a bright sunny shine to my hair, and I use the rest for my garden. The husk remaining after straining the infusions can be thrown onto a compost heap or under currant bushes or other berry bushes.

Sleep tea and coffee

This is a good fertilizer that can be added to the holes when planting seedlings in the ground. It is especially liked by tomatoes, cucumbers, physalis. It is good to add it to the soil mixed with ash when digging it for gladioli, acidander. Stems of plants in such beds are more powerful, plants bloom earlier.

Sometimes in the literature there is a recommendation to use dormant tea or coffee as mulch for garden and indoor plants. My experience has given poor results. In such mulch, all sorts of bug flies start up in indoor plants, after all, the mulch was always just covered with mold, despite the fact that I often loosened it. It turned out badly in the garden too: all the mulch on roses and gladioli is moldy. Although the plants did not get sick, it was still very unpleasant. Now I just mix all these "fertilizers" with the soil and bury them. The soil is more breathable and moisture-absorbing.

In early spring, you can sprinkle sleeping tea or coffee on the beds or a compost heap over the snow. The snow melts much faster, freeing up the ground for early crops.

Some gardeners feed grown seedlings with sleeping tea. For this, a glass of dry tea is poured into a three-liter jar, poured with hot water and infused for 4-5 days, stirring occasionally. Then filter and use the solution as a top dressing.

There is also such a useful experience of using tea in gardening: if there is a suspicion that the cuttings of black currant, cut for rooting, are infected with a kidney mite, then they are treated with tea before planting so as not to drag this mite into your garden along with the cuttings. For this, 2 g of tea is brewed with boiling water in a liter of water, kept for a day. (Freshly brewed tea can damage the plants.) The cuttings are immersed in the solution for 3-4 hours. After planting in moist soil, cuttings should not be watered to maintain toxicity longer.

Before you put sleeping tea or coffee in a jar, they must be thoroughly dried, otherwise they will become moldy. You can prepare any tea: black, green, small, large, whole leaves, even tea bags are used.

Orange peels

Used against aphids, thrips, spider mites.

Plants are sprayed with this infusion: 1 kg of crusts are passed through a meat grinder, poured with water in a three-liter jar. Close tightly, insist in a dark place for five days. Then filter and squeeze well. Bottled, corked. If dry crusts are used, then they are pre-soaked and then twisted in a meat grinder.

For spraying, take 100 ml of infusion and 40 g of laundry soap per 10 liters of water, process at least 2-3 times.

Against spider mites - at least 5-6 times with an interval of 5-7 days.

Twelve great ways to fertilize your houseplants

1. Top dressing with sugar
1 teaspoon of sugar is evenly poured onto the surface of the ground before watering. Or mix 2 teaspoons of sugar in a glass of water. This feeding is carried out once a week. Show in full.

2. Top dressing with eggshells
Eggshells are rich in calcium and calcium neutralizes acidity.
Therefore, when applying mineral fertilizers that increase the acidity of the soil, shells are added to neutralize. The shells of raw eggs are washed well, dried and crushed, then added to the soil. Eggshell is a product that decomposes slowly, so add very sparingly. And it is worth chopping as small as possible. Suitable for fertilizing adult cacti.

4. Another method that is suitable for fertilizing seedlings. The previously washed and dried shell is poured with 3 liters of hot water, infused for 5 days, then the seedlings are watered.

5. Top dressing with banana skins
The banana skins are finely chopped and dried. When transplanting, plants are poured into a layer or simply embedded in the soil.

6. You can use another method. The dried skins are ground in a coffee grinder. It turns out a dark brown powder, which can be poured into a pot with a plant before watering, or diluted with water and used as a liquid top dressing.
Such a banana dressing is suitable for flowering plants, roses respond well, delight with abundant flowering. Flowering provokes potassium, which is rich in bananas.

7. Top dressing with ash
For 1 liter of water, take 30 g of ash and insist for a week, stirring from time to time. Then they are used for watering plants. Wood ash contains potassium, phosphorus, calcium. Phosphorus provides energy processes in plant cells and is one of the most important elements needed by plants.

8. Tea and coffee
Sleep tea and coffee dry well. It is added as a mulch and fertilizer for indoor plants. To feed the seedlings, make an infusion of sleeping tea. 1 glass of tea is poured with 3 liters of hot water and infused for 5 days, stirring. Strain and use as top dressing.

Tea and coffee neutralize the alkaline environment, so it is advisable to use it for plants - lovers of acidic soil. When transplanting or transferring a plant, the remains of tea are placed on the drainage layer, then the soil, and then the plant sits down. The additives in the form of tea and coffee make the earth light. It is highly undesirable to apply such fertilizer if soil flies live in pots, this will only enhance their reproduction.

9. Water from rinsing cereals
Many housewives use water from washing cereals (rice, buckwheat, etc.) as fertilizer. Such water contains silicon, iron, magnesium, phosphorus.

10. Fertilization with onion skins
Onion hulls have proven to be a very effective plant fertilizer. Moreover, onion peel infusion contains a substance that destroys pathogenic microflora. Infusion is more often used as a foliar dressing, rich in trace elements, and plants perceive it as a full-fledged fertilizer. Prepare the infusion as follows: 10g - 20g of husk is poured with 5 liters of warm water, insisted for 4 days. Or in a quick way: pour a liter of boiling water over the husk and boil for 1-2 minutes, leave for 2 hours and can be sprayed from a spray bottle.

11. Spraying with infusion of orange peels
This is more prevention against spider mites and scale insects. Citrus peels are poured with a liter of boiling water and infused for 4-5 hours, then filtered. Plants are sprayed from a spray bottle.

12. Aloe juice is a growth biostimulant
It is used to increase seed germination. When the seeds are soaked, a few drops of aloe juice are added to the water, kept for 8-20 hours. When watering indoor plants, aloe juice is also added. Use the juice of plants that have reached 3 years of age, after keeping the leaf for several days in the refrigerator.

Orange peel

Orange peels contain much more vitamins A, C and E than pulp. The rind is rich in potassium, phosphorus, sodium, flavonoids and pectins. That is why orange peels are widely used in summer cottages. To improve the quality of the soil, the skins are dug into the ground to a depth of 5 cm. This will saturate the soil with nitrogen and improve seed germination. And by adding it to the compost, you will solve two problems at once: provide fertilization with a nutrient medium for microflora and scare away insects from the substrate.

To speed up the process of decomposition of the peel, wash it thoroughly and chop it.

What are the benefits and benefits of peeling potatoes?

Any summer resident wants to consistently receive a good harvest from his garden plot, spending a minimum of money and effort on this. Therefore, instead of buying fertilizers in the store, all kinds of folk remedies are used.Chemical and organic fertilizers have other disadvantages in addition to their high cost. In the soil into which you apply them, not only crops begin to grow well, but also all kinds of weeds. If the dosage is not strictly observed, excess chemicals from the soil into vegetables, berries and fruits, and from there into your body. As you can easily guess, there is nothing good in such an "overdose". It will not benefit your health or the soil.

Potato peelings, the benefits of which have been tested by time for the garden, are absolutely safe for humans and completely free of charge. Unlike chemicals, organic matter decomposes much faster, being processed by bacteria in the soil. This means that the necessary microelements will reach their destination faster through the root system. The “side effect” of rapid decomposition is heat generation. If you feed in the spring, the soil will warm up noticeably faster.

The structure of the soil also improves. It becomes lighter, looser. This is especially important for peat, clay, and silty soils.

Everyone knows that potatoes are very healthy. It contains many trace elements useful for humans - potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, sodium. But the same substances are necessary for the proper growth and development of plants. The most common chemical fertilizers contain precisely nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.

Potato peelings contain many nutrients that the plant needs.

In addition, 10–25% (depending on the variety) of the potato mass is starch, and 3-5% is glucose. It is these substances that plants store in seeds, bulbs or tubers. Starch and glucose are the main food for the developing embryo. Consequently, potato fertilization will be beneficial to crops at all stages of development.

Another important point is the availability of potato peelings. Potatoes in one form or another are present on the table of every family, regardless of their financial situation, almost every day. Even if you peel off the skin in a very thin layer, about a tenth of the mass of tubers will still be discarded. The more likely option is 15–20%. Now calculate how many cleanups you can accumulate by next summer if you set a similar goal from the beginning of autumn.

Pest control

Another useful property of potatoes is a great bait for pests. Slugs, the clicker beetle (its larvae are popularly known as the wireworm) and the Colorado potato beetle are especially fond of it.

You need to start setting traps as soon as the first shoots appear or the seedlings are planted in the ground. This way you are guaranteed to protect the future harvest.

Potato peel pest trap is easy

Traps are easy to make. Dig glass jars, old unnecessary buckets and pans, cans or cut plastic bottles into the ground so that the edge of the container roughly coincides with the top edge of the pit. The container should be deep enough and without holes. Put potato peels on the bottom every night. To enhance the effect, you can sprinkle them with sweet water (a tablespoon of sugar per glass), syrup, or add a little old jam, which no one will eat anymore. In the morning, you will only have to go around the containers, collect the pests that have fallen into them during the night and destroy them. Just do not throw the collected over the fence. After a few hours, slugs and insects will return to your site.

Another option for a trap is to bury a long piece of wire with cleaners strung on it in the ground. Leave one end sticking out of the ground or mark the place where the trap is buried. Dig it out every 2-3 days, collect pests that come across and change the bait to a fresh one.

How and where to store cleaning

If you live in a private house, you will find the application of potato peelings without problems. Set aside an area for organic fertilizer on site and send the peel directly to the compost. If you visit the dacha only during the season, you need to think about a convenient option for storing biofertilizers in an apartment.

For the convenience of storing cleaners, they can be dried or frozen.

  • Freezing... The option is suitable for the period when the temperature outside is freezing. Take the peel to an unheated balcony and spread it out in a thin layer. Cleaning freezes quickly, so calmly build up layers, adding more and more portions of potato waste.

You need to remove the peel from the balcony as soon as the temperature there rises above 0 ° C. Indeed, in warmth, the product quickly rots and exudes an unpleasant odor.

  • Drying... Drying cleaners is more difficult than freezing. But then it is more convenient to store the product. You can dry potato skins in the oven or on a hot battery. After heat treatment, grind the raw materials in a blender or meat grinder, and then dry again.

Another argument in favor of hot processing of cleanings in the oven is that such raw materials no longer contain any infections, including the phytophthora fungus, which cannot be said for sure about a frozen product.

Alternative fertilizers. Should we take them seriously?

Egg shells as fertilizer

Gardeners of all countries regularly feed their indoor "favorites" as granularand liquid fertilizers... Flowers, having received the next "vitamin cocktail", grow faster. But, unfortunately, the composition of the soil in pots with your pets will not change from this.

Of course, you can buy ready-made soil and add it to the pots when transplanting or add it, which is regularly practiced. But more and more often, even with the soil of proven manufacturers, gardeners bring different animals into the house, be they caterpillars, beetles or flies. Weed seeds, unfortunately, are also not uncommon.

Many gardeners are interested in the so-called alternative fertilizers - kitchen waste. They are able to improve the condition and structure of the soil, and certainly do not contain any unpleasant surprises in the form of pests.

Sleep tea and coffee grounds.
Tea brewing (including herbal tea, mint, for example) and coffee really make the potted soil lighter. Advantage of use: "neutralizes" alkaline soil. The negative side of using: if you have settled soil flies, the introduction of such funds will dramatically accelerate the rate of their reproduction. So this fertilizer can be used only in the complete absence of this living creature.

Sleep tea is added when transferring flowers to large pots and flowerpots. A layer of expanded clay is laid on the bottom, then a layer of sleeping tea (small), sprinkle with earth on top. The plant is transplanted with a lump of "native" land. With this method, plant residues very quickly turn into a light substrate. In addition, they are excellent at retaining moisture in the soil. But a fertilizer in the full sense of the word, neither dormant tea nor coffee grounds can be called. These are only soil fillers.

Eggshell.
The shell is a source of calcium. But he, unlike nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, is not the primary fertilizer. The shell, ground into powder, will be beneficial, provided that it is applied along with mineral fertilizers. This is because most of these fertilizers increase the acidity of the soil, and the shell acts as a neutralizer of this acidity. A positive effect is noted - the soil is less acidified. When adding eggshells to the soil, remember: they decompose extremely slowly, so do not add too much and often, know when to stop. Any seedlings will develop slowly (in some cases, even die) if you overdo it with this fertilizer. A similar effect is observed in seedlings of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Eggshell powder is a fertilizer for mature plants.

Onion peel.
Once a month, you can pamper your plants with onion peel infusion. They should spray the plants and the topsoil for preventive disinfection. Pour the husk with about six cups of boiling water, keep it on fire for one and a half minutes. Insist for two hours, strain through cheesecloth and pour into a spray bottle. Spray only with fresh solution, using it all at once (the solution cannot be stored). Almost all plants perceive this solution as a complete fertilizer.

Orange peel.
It is used in a similar way to onion peels. Spraying with orange peel solution is to prevent the appearance of spider mites. The solution is prepared at random. Fresh or dried peels of oranges (and / or tangerines) with six cups of boiling water. We insist 12 hours, filter. Spraying will delight you not only with its effectiveness, but will also give you a wonderful smell of orange, which will stay in the room for several hours.

Other experiments.
You can often find information that plants can be watered with water left over from washing buckwheat, rice and other cereals, as well as peeled potatoes. It may be useful, but as a rule, there is no particular effect. Drainage can replace seed husks, but it is more fertilizer for compost pits.

As you can see, all these natural ingredients, of course, will be useful to your indoor plants to one degree or another. But they will never replace fertile, nutritious soil.
