Aroma for the whole garden: 3 types of cotton wool, which has a pleasant sweet smell

Vatochniks did not gain much popularity among gardeners. But their properties: a long flowering period and exuding aroma, make you take a closer look at these interesting plants.

Syrian cotton wool

A plant from North America that became Syrian due to the mistake of the Italian naturalist Kortuna, who confused it with a plant from Syria, which has a similar appearance.

Perennial, reaches a height of 1.5 - 2 meters. The flowers are small, with petals 3-4 mm long, pink, purple or reddish in color. They are collected in beautiful umbellate inflorescences. The leaves of the plant are dark green with a wavy edge, reach a length of 20 cm, in width - 12 cm. Stems are erect, thickened.

Syrian vatochnik is curious in that it has a thick, reminiscent of the smell of chocolate, aroma during the flowering period, which begins in July and lasts for a whole month.

For this reason, Syrian Vatochnik is a honey plant. Up to 200 kg of fragrant and tasty honey can be harvested from 1 hectare.

It is also a medicinal plant. It is not for nothing that he is also called Asclepias, in honor of the ancient Greek god of healing Asclepius. The culture is used to treat acute cardiovascular and skin diseases, has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and strengthens the immune system.

The appearance of the plant is not too flashy. In gardens, it is used to fill empty space in flower beds and to cover up unsightly buildings.

The flower grows on any soil, is unpretentious and hardy, tolerates both severe frosts and drought well. But it should be borne in mind that it is a weed and can grow, displacing other weeds and crops.

Tuberose cotton wool

Ascleias tuberose, or tuberous vatnik. A decorative look, used to decorate a garden, personal plots.

The height of the bush is 50-110 cm. The foliage is abundant, elongated, green or dark green, covered with soft hairs. The flowers are small, orange or orange-red, also collected in umbrella-shaped inflorescences.

It blooms effectively, profusely, for a long time, from the first - second decade of July to autumn frosts. Fills the air with a strong, pleasant aroma.

For the winter, Tuberose Vatochnik should be covered with spruce branches, and opened as soon as it starts to warm, so that the plant does not turn over. They plant it in well-lit, open and heated areas, but not in the shade. The plant grows well, so it makes sense to limit it with borders.

The most famous garden varieties: Gay Butterfly - bush height up to 70 cm, red, yellow and orange flowers; Maharaj's vatnik - up to 50 cm tall, bright orange inflorescences.

Kurasavsky cotton wool

The only species that can be grown both in the garden and indoors. A good option for those who do not have a plot. However, it should be borne in mind that this is a fairly large plant (it can reach 70-80 cm) and it needs space. Therefore, a small pot will not work; it is best to use a tub for planting.

The stems of the flower are erect, the leaves are opposite, dark green above and gray-green below.

It blooms with interesting flowers of an unusual shape. In the center there is an orange-yellow crown, from which red or yellow stipules petals go down in a skirt. Flowers are collected in umbrellas up to 10 cm in diameter. Like other species, it has a strong aroma that attracts insects.

In a warm apartment, they could bloom all year round, but the reduction in the length of daylight hours in winter stops this process.

Needs bright, natural lighting, so it is preferable to place them on the lightest window sills. Feels good at temperatures from 15 to 18 degrees. In winter, if the room temperature exceeds these values, it is necessary to ensure constant spraying.

In relation to the soil, it is unpretentious, but requires abundant watering.

In general, the plant is quite undemanding to care for. The main disadvantage is that it quickly degenerates, which leads to the need to replace it with a new one.

From the poisonous juice of the kyurasavskogo cotton wool, preparations are made for the treatment of diseases of the uterus and appendages.

Cotton wool

Vatochnik, or Asclepias (Asclepias) - an extraordinary flowering plant from the Kutrovy family. There are more than 200 species of this plant. Vatochnik can be a shrub, dwarf shrub and herbaceous perennial. There are both deciduous and evergreen plants. Previously, this plant was used to make sturdy ropes or stuffing for toys and furniture, but nowadays many other popular materials help and is now grown only as an ornamental plant.

Vatochnik-swallower. Description and types of care

Flowers fleece small, from 1 to 2 cm, on thin pedicels, white, pink, red, collected in racemose umbrellas, appear in July-August. In the middle lane, the fruits ripen only under the condition of a hot summer. They have a spindle-shaped shape, resembling the body of a swallow, for which the flower was popularly named swallower... Ripe seeds are covered with cotton-like wavy fluff, which gave the plant a different name, cotton wool.

Cotton wool - a vigorous plant with powerful, deep-lying filamentous rhizomes and erect, up to 1.5 m tall, pubescent stems, hollow inside. Leaves fleece oblong or ovate, large, petiolate, opposite or whorled on the stem, 3 each, the lower part of the leaf is covered with dense tomentose pubescence, the outer part is covered with soft whitish hairs. All parts contain a toxic milky sap that irritates the skin, especially when exposed simultaneously with the sun.

What time to plant

In middle latitudes, willow herb is grown through seedlings, and also in a seedless way. The seeds of this culture remain viable for 3 years, but they do not have time to ripen every year, but only when the summer is very hot. But seed can always be bought at a specialized store.

Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in the last days of March or the first - in April. To do this, use boxes with drainage holes, they should be filled with loamy soil. The seeds are buried into the substrate by 1–1.5 cm, then they are watered with a spray bottle. The containers must be covered with glass or foil, and then they are removed to a warm place. The crops are ventilated every day, and at the same time the condensate accumulated on the shelter is removed. Watering is carried out using a sprayer once every two or three days. Amicable shoots should appear after 1.5-2 weeks, after which they are transferred to a cooler place (no more than 18 degrees). The shelter from the container is removed after the plant grows stronger. The seedlings usually grow very well and are not a problem for the grower.

A pick of seedlings is carried out when two pairs of true leaf plates begin to form in them. For picking, individual cups are used, into which drainage is poured, while the layer thickness should be about 20-30 mm. And they are filled with the same soil mixture that is used for sowing seeds. The transplanted plants must be protected from direct sunlight for the first two days. After the seedlings take root well, you need to pinch them.

Before planting the fleece in open ground, it should be hardened for 15 days. Seedlings are planted in the first days of June, adhering to the 50x50 cm scheme. Bushes grown from seeds will bloom for the first time at 3 or 4 years of growth.

Sowing seeds can be carried out directly into open soil. This is done in early spring, immediately after the snow cover has melted. The site must be sunny with cultivated soil. It grows best of all on weakly acidic nutritious loam.

Landing rules

To begin with, you need to dig up the soil to the depth of the bayonet of the shovel, while you need to select all the roots of the weed. Then the surface of the site is leveled and grooves are made in it. The seed is buried in the soil by 30 mm, then the furrows are closed, and the crops are well watered. If the seeds were sown in dry soil, then it is recommended to cover the crops with a film, thanks to which the seedlings will appear much faster.

Certain types of such a plant need a restriction, which is set during planting, since young shoots are able to germinate almost 100 cm from the parent bush. In order to prevent strong growth of such a flower, you can use limiters or plant the bushes in containers dug into the ground, which have holes for drainage. If you take good care of the fleece, then in the same place it can be grown for about 15 years.
