Houseplants

Aichryson (lat.Aichryson), or love tree, belongs to the genus of succulent plants of the Tolstyanka family, growing in the cracks of rocks in the Azores and Canary Islands, Madeira, Morocco and Portugal. There are fifteen species in the genus, represented by herbaceous annuals and perennials, as well as dwarf shrubs. The name "aichrizon" is formed from two Greek words: ai - "always" and chrysos - "golden". The aichrizon plant is very similar to its related money tree.

Planting and caring for aichrizon

  • Bloom: from April or May for two months.
  • Lighting: bright but diffused light (east or west window).
  • Temperature: during the growing season - normal for living quarters, during the dormant period - 8-10 ˚C.
  • Watering: after the potting medium is half dry.
  • Air humidity: moderate. In hot weather, it is recommended to wash the plant under a warm shower from time to time.
  • Top dressing: during the period of active growth, 2 times a month with fertilizers for succulent plants with a low nitrogen content.
  • Rest period: autumn and winter.
  • Transfer: annual.
  • Cropping: in order to form the crown during the growing season, the plant is pinched. With rejuvenating pruning, up to 5% of the vegetative mass is removed.
  • Reproduction: more often by cuttings, less often by seeds.
  • Pests: spider mites, mealybugs, scale insects and nematodes.
  • Diseases: root rot, white edema.

Botanical description

Aichrizon flower has partially branched, practically non-lignified stems, on which fleecy, rounded-ovoid leaves, collected in rosettes, are mostly oppositely located. Leaves are painted green or dark green, sometimes with gray, yellow, red or white blotches. Damaged leaves give off an unpleasant odor. The shape of the leaves resembles a heart, hence the name of the plant - "tree of love". The aichrizon tree blooms with corymbose or paniculate inflorescences of small star-shaped flowers of red, white or cream color in April or May, and after flowering, the rosette that forms the peduncle dies off. Home aichrizon is grown both as a bush and as a standard tree.

Aichrizone care at home

Growing conditions

Caring for aichrizone is extremely simple. Despite the fact that the houseplant Aichrizon is a great lover of light, he likes to take sun baths through gauze or a curtain - the light should be diffused. Therefore, the best place for aichrison is the east or west window. Try not to forget to rotate the indoor air chrison from time to time around its axis so that the leaves and branches grow evenly. The plant can withstand the temperature that is comfortable for you, but in winter, do not be afraid to put it in an unheated room, since Aichrizon hibernates normally at 8-10 ºC, and during warm hibernation, leaves can fall off and shoots can stretch out.

How often to water the "tree of love" aichrizon, you will be told by the state of its leaves: if they are dense and elastic, watering can be skipped, but if you find a slight loss of turgor, then it is time to moisten the soil. Usually, it is time to water the plant when the potted soil is halfway dry. It is necessary to water the flowers of aichrizon with a small amount of water, but often, from abundant and rare watering, the roots of the aichrizon rot. In spring and summer, the soil in the pot is moistened more often than in winter.

Aichrizon is undemanding to air humidity, but sometimes likes to take a warm shower in summer. In winter, water procedures for aikhrizon are contraindicated. To form a crown or a standard tree, they resort to pruning the plant. Remove weak shoots, and pinch the tops of young shoots to enhance tillering and crown density. In the spring, the elongated shoots are also shortened.

Fertilizer

Aichrizon should be fed during the active growing season, in spring and summer, 2 times a month with complex fertilizer for succulent plants with a low nitrogen content.

Bloom

Aichrizon blooms usually in the summer, but in order to see the blooming of Aichrizon, certain conditions must be met: the pot should not be spacious, watering should not be too frequent, the plant should overwinter in a cool, bright place. As you can see, supernatural efforts will not be required from you, but if you fulfill the listed requirements, you can enjoy the blooming of aichrizon for six months. Only when this holiday is over will you find that the plant has lost more than half of its leaves, so cut off all faded flower stalks, weak shoots and increase watering so that the plant can gradually recover.

Aichrizon transplant

Caring for a home Aichrizon also provides for its annual transplant, provided that you do not plant it in a pot that is too spacious - the pot for the plant should be cramped. A mixture of four parts of sod land with the addition of one part of leafy earth, humus and refined sand is used as a soil for aichrizon. Do not forget that there must be a layer of expanded clay at the bottom.

Reproduction of aichrizon

Growing from seeds

Aichrizon is propagated both by seed and cuttings, and both of these methods give good results. Seeds are sown in a soil mixture of leafy earth and cleaned sand in a ratio of 2: 1. Crops in a bright place under glass are regularly ventilated and sprayed, and when shoots appear in a couple of weeks, they are dived into boxes at a distance of 1 cm from each other, and the composition of the mixture should now be different: half a part of clean sand and light earth and one piece of leafy land. After a while, the grown chrysanthemums are planted in personal pots 7 cm in diameter and grown at a temperature of 16-18 ºC, subject to daily watering.

Propagation by cuttings

The cuttings that you got after pruning aichrizone should be dried in a dry, dark place for a couple of hours, and then planted in a shallow container in a mixture of vermiculite with sand or in soil for succulent plants with the addition of sand. The cuttings take root rather quickly and can then be transplanted into 7 cm pots. You can also root the cuttings in water to which charcoal should be added.

Aichrizon pests and diseases

Harmful insects and diseases

If you set up the correct watering of the Aichrizon and put it under a bright diffused light, and for the winter take it out on a warmed loggia, you will not have any problems with the plant. If you make mistakes in caring for the plant and do not provide it with the necessary content, then spider mites, scale insects, mealybugs and nematodes can harm the aichrizon. Due to improper watering, aichrizon can get sick with any of the rot.

We have repeatedly written how and how to deal with these pests and diseases, we also wrote that you will not have to do this if you take care of the plants responsibly, so we will not repeat ourselves.

Aichrizon's leaves are falling

If this happens in the warm season, the cause may be the action of direct sunlight, drying out of the earthy coma, or, conversely, too frequent watering. If the leaf fall has passed in the autumn-winter period, then it is time for the aikhrizon to move to a cool, bright room for the winter. The leaves of the plant also fall during flowering.

Description

At the top of the stem, a deciduous crown is immediately formed, due to which the bush takes on the appearance of a dome, a ball. Leaves are emerald, bright green, gray-green, fleecy. They are collected in pairs or groups at the top of the branches. The shape of the leaves is different: triangular, round, in the form of a heart. Because of the latter similarity, the bush is called the "tree of love." There are also specimens on the foliage of which there are blotches of different colors.

Chamomile or star-shaped flowers form in clusters on long peduncles that branch out. They are golden or different shades of yellow. The diameter of the "star" flower reaches 2 cm, and the number of pointed petals varies from 6 to 12.

Reproduction of aeonium

There are 2 ways of propagation of aeonium: seeds and apical cuttings.

Seed propagation

Seeds just need to be scattered on top of the soil without burying them. Periodically, the container needs to be ventilated and the planted seeds should be sprayed. For successful seed germination, it is necessary to create greenhouse conditions, so the container is covered with glass. The optimum temperature for the seed to germinate is about +20 degrees.

Propagation by apical cuttings

To use this method of propagation, you need to carefully cut off the stem with a rosette. To prevent the plant from dying, the cut is rubbed with activated carbon and protected from bright light for several days, providing enough cool air. In the pot of a new young plant, you need to collect a mixture of sand and leafy earth in a ratio of 2: 1, watering moderately. Roots are formed after about half a month.

Caring for purslane at home

This plant is distinguished by its unpretentiousness, so even inexperienced growers can easily grow it.

Illumination

In order for the plant to grow and develop normally, it needs good bright lighting, and at the same time, direct rays of the sun must be present. In this regard, a south-facing window will suit him perfectly. To form a beautiful uniform crown, you can resort to one trick. Namely, it is necessary to regularly turn the purslane pot in different directions to the light source.

In winter, such a plant will need additional supplementary lighting with special phytolamps.

Temperature regime

You feel quite comfortable in the mid-latitude climate in the summer. In the spring and summer, it is recommended to move it to fresh air (to the garden, to the balcony). It should be remembered that such a flower simply needs fresh air, therefore, when growing in a room, systematic ventilation will be needed.

Portulacaria needs a cool winter. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature in the room where the plant is located is not lower than 10 degrees. Otherwise, the fleshy leaves freeze and become lethargic.

How to water

Such a succulent plant is quite accustomed to arid climates, where rain is a comparative rarity. Therefore, when grown in room conditions, it should be provided with similar conditions. So, it is recommended to water it only after the soil in the pot dries out by 1/3. With a cool wintering, watering should be more scarce and less frequent, because the root system and foliage, with excessive absorption of water, rot very quickly.

If watering has not been done for a long enough time, then the foliage on the plant becomes shriveled. However, after it has been watered, the leaves will become smooth again.

Water should be watered with water at room temperature, in which there is no chlorine. If the tap water is not chlorinated, then you can use it without preliminary settling. In this case, the hardness of the water does not play a special role.

Humidity

It is not necessary to artificially increase the humidity of the air. But for hygienic purposes, it is recommended to arrange a warm shower for the plant, which will help remove dust accumulated on the leaves.

Fertilizer

During intensive growth, fertilizing is carried out at a frequency of 1 time in 2 weeks. For this, fertilizers with a low nitrogen content are used. So, ready-made liquid fertilizer for succulents and cacti is perfect. From mid-autumn to mid-spring, all feeding stops.

Earth mixture

A suitable substrate should be loose, low in nutrients and permeable to water and air. In order to prepare an earth mixture, you need to combine the purchased soil for succulents and cacti with coarse sand (can be replaced with vermiculite) and brick chips (or fine gravel), which should be taken in a ratio of 3: 1: 1.

Transplant features

This plant has a relatively slow growth. In this regard, regular frequent transplants are needed only for very young specimens. An adult plant needs to be transplanted only if necessary, so when the root system completely fills the container.

Reproduction methods

As a rule, when grown indoors, propagate by cuttings. At the same time, rather thick branches are suitable for cuttings, on which there should be 4 internodes. After pruning, they are left in the open air for 1-2 days for drying, after which they are planted for rooting in a mixture of sand and peat. The first roots should appear after 2-3 weeks. After 2-3 months, the rooted cuttings can be transplanted into a permanent pot.

It can be propagated by seeds, but buying them can be difficult.

Pests and diseases

Sufficiently resistant to pests. However, on such a plant, mealybugs, scale insects or spider mites can be found. Once these pests are found, the plant needs to take a warm shower. In case of severe infection, you will also need an insecticide treatment of the appropriate action.

Disease resistant. But he can get sick due to violation of the rules of care. For example, with abundant watering, especially in a cool room, a variety of rot may appear.

Partial loss of foliage can happen due to lack of light in winter or for other reasons. But when the plant is placed in favorable conditions, the leaves grow quickly.

Care errors and their elimination

It is difficult to destroy aichrizons. But if you systematically ignore the rules of care, the following problems may arise:

High temperature during dormancy, drying out of the soil or waterlogging

In winter, keep the flower at a temperature of + 8-10 degrees, water as needed

Pulling out shoots, pallor and shallowness of leaves

Put the flowerpot in a brighter place

Being under the scorching sun, violation of the irrigation regime

Provide diffused light, control soil moisture

Lethargy and wrinkled leaves

Water after half of the soil has dried

How to choose a healthy plant in the store

This exotic representative of the flora is quite unpretentious and easy to care for. But, if you buy a poor-quality or diseased seedling, then all efforts will be in vain. A lot depends on the right choice. Ask your dealer if there is a drainage layer in the container and check the drainage holes yourself. If this is not the case, then the roots may be infected with rot.

Outwardly, the pet should have a healthy and decorative appearance, without damage, fallen and yellowed leaves, unpleasant odor, and spots. Matching the size of the flowerpot to the size of the tree of love. Too much capacity is unacceptable, in which case rot of the lower part of the plant is also possible.

A transplant is required after purchase. Store primer is not suitable for further use.
